Fish Trade

What caught my attention is the last portion of the article, where it pinpoints the animated movie, Finding Nemo, for a surge in demand for clown fishes as pets. It says that some areas suffers from a 75% decrease of clown fish population.

How eye-opening! The media is such a powerful tool when it comes to influencing people's minds. Other examples include the film Jaws. It suggests that sharks are horrible, violent creatures, which causes people to fear them. As an animation student, it makes me think twice before I carelessly make a film about friendly sharks. On top of being hunted for their fins, the sharks would have to worry about being kept as pets!

Back to the topic, unregulated fishing and unsustainable fish farming are definitely problematic. The poor fishes have to go through a series of torturous journeys from their home into someone's aquarium. It makes me wonder if keeping fishes as pets is even a good idea to start with. People tend to do things that serve their purpose, and give little thought to the environmental impacts. Seeing the poor conditions and high mortality rate of capture fishes scare me. It might be similar to other animals too!
