The FDA statement that the genetically modified salmon is as safe as the Atlantic salmon is rather misleading. To my knowledge, most Atlantic salmons sold in the market are farmed. Consuming farmed salmon, on the other hand, is known to be more harmful than eating wild salmon. This is due to the accumulation of pollutants in the farmed salmon through eating the feeds.
The GM salmon can grow twice as fast as a normal salmon. This is very lucrative, because the fish farmers can reduce the resources spent to grow the salmons into half. They will be able to sell more salmon within the same period of time too.
I sense that the news in the article is in favor of the AquaAdvantage company, so as to gain as much support for the GM salmon as possible. The FDA said that eating GM salmon is "as safe as" consuming conventional salmon. Sure, they are telling the truth, but we know that the word "safe" is extremely board. As long as people do not die or are proven to fall sick solely from eating those salmons, they can be labelled as "safe".
